La Gran Cojida (The Great Catch)

In La Gran Cojida, Cuban artist Julio Emilio Neira Milian reimagines the American Dream as the Cuban Dream—the pursuit of freedom and a life beyond Cuba.

Created in oil, collage, and three-dimensional baseball players on canvas, the work portrays a mulata Cuban woman through a photographic mask as sensual, elegant, and powerful, with the strength of a Samurai, hoping to "catch" a baseball player as her path to escape and a better future.

The title carries a provocative double meaning: "The Great Catch" refers to winning the coveted baseball player, while in colloquial Spanish it also suggests an extraordinary sexual encounter. Through race, sexuality, humor, and social commentary, Neira Milian explores desire, survival, and aspiration in contemporary Cuba, while honoring the nation's baseball legacy, with four Cuban players inducted into the U.S. National Baseball Hall of Fame.
