Uaio Antor

Uaio Antor has developed a unique approach to geometric abstraction through a combination of optical art and color perception that he describes as “TriBimensionality” because it appears to transform two dimensions into three. However, this is only a matter of point of view. The works are flat—or made flat with thinly-separated layers—but the eye considers them fully-formed with volume and depth. This causes the mind to respond in different ways to each work, with their unique contours and shadows. His work forces viewers to look closely in order to understand what is presented; and how the artist has managed to subvert the reality of the materials into something else. Each work is based on the Antor’s skill with forms in space, manipulating positive and negative areas for new visual effects as well as the elements of color and design that inform them. Influenced by a decades- long successful career in marketing and graphic design, Antor has a keen understanding of the formal principles of perception and composition: line, shape, color, form, and their responsive potential. Basic to everything he creates is a consideration of how these elements can be manipulated for maximum effect. By playing with optical elements such as color interaction, after-images, shadow patterns and perceptual movement—as well as their combinations—he transforms simple geometric contours into a relief effect that appears deeper or shallower than it is. The effect can be visually bewildering as the objects seem to shift in space when viewed from different angles. Each work forces a visual interaction on the part of the viewer as color planes move in time and space. Adding to the confusion, the boundaries between the second and the third dimensions are both diminished and reconfigured in unique patterns that are at times repetitive or treated systematically. This is TriBimensionality.

UAIO ANTOR Uaio keeps his childhood alive by remembering his first geometry class, where he learned that a line is a succession of points. That idea transformed the way he saw the world: objects ceased to be single units and became the sum of their parts. He understood that three-dimensionality is nothing more than the accumulation of infinite two-dimensional planes. His experience in advertising led him to combine geometry and perception, creating artworks that turn the viewer into the author, by mentally completing the non-existent volumes in the piece. He called this phenomenon Tri-Bimensional: an exploration of geometric art where two-dimensional elements are perceived as three-dimensional, thanks to the layering of aluminum sheets intervened with color. This approach studies how two-dimensional planes relate and generate new forms in the mind, revealing that our perception constructs the world we know and have learned to see as our reality. This effect allows us to explore non-existent reality, to see figures that exist only in our minds. Tri-Bimensional challenges the limits of imagination and perception—we cannot imagine anything that doesn’t already exist, and of all our senses, the easiest one to deceive is the one we use the most.
